The DNA of work
Every organisation is unique but at the same time shares certain attributes with other organisations. How your business adapts to a changing world is critical, and key to that success is in understanding your DNA of work.
Since 1992 our founder, Andrew Mawson, has been intrigued with how science and research can transform the world of work. This early fascination spread to working with like-minded people and the birth of Advanced Workplace Associates, now known as AWA.
From the very beginning the DNA of Work has been the connection between us all. We transform the world of work for the better. It’s in our DNA.
In the news

Core principles
Our principles guide everything we do, including how we interact with our employees, clients, partners and the wider AWA community.
Human-centered
We focus relentlessly on your people. As individuals, teams and whole organisations. Everything we do comes back again and again to ‘does it work for people?’. We understand the complexity of individuals working in distributed and hybrid teams and organisations to achieve a purpose.
Climate forward
The planet is on fire. We get that. We approach work, workplace and change programmes in ways that help you make mission-critical, informed choices that impact your employees, your leadership, your organisation, your community, and yes, the entire planet. How we implement new ways of working can help to fight climate change.
Science guided
Our work is rigorously supported by neuroscience around cognition and performance, to explore, analyse and inform strategies for work, workplace and change. We partner with leading research organisations such as the Centre for Evidence Based Management (CEBMa) to provide deep insights into the ways we work.
Transformational
Our programmes drive workplace change and transformation at every level of an organisation – from frontline staff, to middle management and leadership – and include transformational change around the physical space, digital tools, human learning and development and the employee experience – wherever it happens.
Action-oriented
Our work is not a report that sits on a shelf. We have deep skills and innovative tools and methods to help you create a dynamic roadmap for change. We then facilitate your organisation’s journey to new models of work, workplace and organisation. We are there alongside you to make sure you’ve really got it until you are ready to take off the training wheels and fly solo.
Global yet local
We are a small, independent, global team, with the ability to deliver consistent methods and models, yet with deep understanding of local cultures and contexts, able to show up and support on a moment’s notice. We have worked with some of the most respected organisations on the planet.
